Li'l Eddie's Top 10 Movies of 2019

Hey everybody, it’s that time again! I had another fun year at the movies and went to great pains using overly complicated methods (shout out to tabroom.com) to arrive at my annual list of favorite movies this year. I sat down and watched 84 new films over the past 12 months. Below are my top ten (16 if you count the honorable mentions).

Quick notes up front: I did my best to see most of the major 2019 releases but some did fall through the cracks. The only major awards contender that I have not caught yet is 1917 (which has only been in limited release since Christmas day). More importantly THESE ARE MY OPINIONS! There were many other movies that I enjoyed this year. The ones on this list hit me in the feels.

So here it is. First, Honorable Mentions:

Dolemite is My Name (Netflix)

The Amazing Johnathan Documentary (Hulu)

Bombshell (Lionsgate)

The Farewell (A24)

Ford v. Ferrari (20th Century Fox)

Screwball (Greenwich Entertainment)

And now the Top Ten:

10. Little Women (Columbia Pictures)

Writer/Director Greta Gerwig does a superb job of telling a classic story in a fresh and modern way. Fans of the Louisa May Alcott novel (like my mother and sister) get treated to the same story but rather than telling it chronologically, Gerwig toggles back and forth between the girls’ childhood and young adulthood. This changed my perspective on some characters and helped me appreciate the gravity of their choices in life. Plus this film looks gorgeous and Timothée Chalamet is so natural it is infuriating.

9. Parasite (Neon)

Do not try and guess where this film is going. You will risk giving yourself a concussion. This film from South Korea has much to say about class and trust but also superbly employs elements of horror and con-men stories that make it a very fun ride. In the end my real takeaway was “Close your windows.”

8. Knives Out (Lionsgate)

There really is nothing like a great “Whodunnit.” Knives Out breathes life into an old, tired genre. Writer/Director Rian Johnson acknowledges that the key to these types of movies is not the story but the characters. Each member of this fully-loaded cast is funnier and crazier than the last. Ana de Armas really grounds the movie playing a home nurse who finds herself out of her depth. Also, Daniel Craig is hanging up his Licence to Kill in 2020, but I hope this is not the last that we have seen of him as detective Benoit Blanc.

7. The Lighthouse (A24)

Look no further for a descent into madness. There is a moment when Willem Defoe’s old sea hag tells Robert Pattinson’s character “If I tells ye to yank out every single nail from every moulderin’ nail-hole and suck off every spec of rust till all them nails sparkle like a sperm whale’s pecker, and then carpenter the whole light station back together from scrap -- and then -- do it all over again -- you’ll do it!” Need I really say more?

6. Avengers: Endgame (Marvel Studios)

Coincidentally, Infinity War also took the number 6 slot on my list last year. Ending a franchise is challenging, but this film is trying to be the culmination of about a half-dozen franchises at once. This is an admirable feat of storytelling and can arguably be seen as the absolute Apex of Hollywood filmmaking.

5. The Biggest Little Farm (Neon)

This is probably the most surprising entry on the list. I had no idea how enchanted I would be by this documentary, which can currently be streamed on Hulu. It follows this couple with a crazy idea to start their own farm and their seven year journey is beautifully captured with some of the best cinematography I have seen in years. If you are feeling a lack of hope and inspiration in your life, give this a whirl and you will not be disappointed.

4. Uncut Gems (A24)

Just when you think you have seen every possible New York story that cinema has to offer, this movie shows up. Adam Sandler’s performance as a crooked diamond merchant with a dangerous gambling problem is horrifying. Yet somehow I found myself rooting for this truly bold idiot.

3. SHAZAM! (DC Entertainment)

Alright, you got me. There is definitely personal bias in this choice. SHAZAM! or the original Captain Marvel is my favorite superhero and I have been pining for this movie since I was 4 years old. This movie contains all of the heart, humor and spectacle that I enjoy in DC TV every week. I also think it is worth noting that this is a kids movie that does not talk down to the viewer, has real stakes and even a couple of scary moments. I sincerely hope DC Movies use this as their bellwether going forward

2. Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood (Columbia Pictures)

We got to see a true master at work this year. I have heard Quentin Tarantino talk in interviews before about how he used to go back to movies all the time to hang out with the characters again. This movie is nothing if it is not a great hang. We get to take our time and get to know these characters as if they were old friends. There is a banging action sequence at the end and we get all the fun stuff we expect from Tarantino but the extra sentimental touches really make this film stand out.

1. Jojo Rabbit (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

A ten year old boy in 1940s Germany, who loves being a Hitler youth so much that Adolf Hitler is his imaginary friend, discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their house. How is that for a premise? This film stopped me in my tracks to the point where I feel that everyone should be required to view it in order to participate in society. It teaches us how easily people can be influenced by the status quo but when push comes to shove, good people can always do the right thing.

Shedding Light On AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D: Why It's Losing The Battle

By Bill Sweeney
additional reporting by Notsocrazy
This show is so "meh", I'm using an image from the Captain America sequel.

ABC's Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. is loosing viewers almost as fast as the Titanic lost passengers. Personally, I don't blame them for jumping ship, I haven't been this let down by a show since "Al Capone's Vault".  The LATimes recently ran a piece by Ryan Faughnder about just how badly things have gotten for the show in terms of ratings:
"Counting only people who watch on the day of first airing, "S.H.I.E.L.D." has lost about 40% of its total audience and half of its viewers ages 18 to 49, the demographic most cherished by advertisers."

"The Nov. 5 episode of "S.H.I.E.L.D." generated a rating of 3.7 among viewers ages 18 to 49 in the live-plus-three-days category, but that still represents a 42% slide from the premiere."
But wait! A marginal tie to to the Thor sequel swooped in and gave the show an uptick that had Motly Fool's Steve Symington wondering if this was a crossover success:
"Thanks largely to interest in the tie-in with its big screen counterpart, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. successfully broke its seven-week ratings downtrend by garnering 6.89 million live viewers and a 2.4 rating in the overall 18-49 demographic. And while the show only managed to increase its total viewership by 1% over last week, it gained a much more impressive 5% in the key adult 18-49 demographic."
After seeing that episode myself, I don't know that returning fans were likely to be impressed enough to have faith in such crossovers. The fact is, a lot of people are wondering where are all the fan-geeks are going, as if you can throw sub-par product at them and they'll just eat it up. When even the nerdiest of geeklings of Marvel fandom are fleeing a perceived "easy win" like this, it's time to take a real hard look.

If you want a clearer picture of why fans have left the show, the reasons are plentiful, I'll tell you as many as I can from the view point of fan of not only comics but TV as well. A in-depth fan-alysis, if you will...

Trailer War: Cruise's OBLIVION vs. Smiths AFTER EARTH

Earth's last days are upon us!

Two trailers have popped up in the last few days and the similarities between them have me thinking we need a little head to head. The recipie cooking away here is relatively familiar as is much of Hollywood's output: One big action star, one upcoming actor, Sci-Fi, a desolate and dying Earth, and mysteries! Ooooooo. Let's take a look!

IRON MAN 3 - First Trailer!

Shellhead's flying back into theaters next year and here's the first good look at what to expect. Pepper's back and in harms way because that what superhero girlfriends do. War Machine has gotten The Iron Patriot paint job. Oooo, there's Guy Pierce. Ben Kingsly's let his hair get all nappy as we finally get Hollywood's version The Mandarin. We see he has the Ten Rings he's known for. If their origin remains unchanged from the comics, one has to wonder if Marvel stalled on introducing him until they established the alien aspects of its movie universe. And if they do hold onto that, does this aspect somehow help tie into the cosmic nature teased for The Avengers 2: More Vengier?

A Master Plan For The Future Of THE BATMAN Movie Franchise. For Free.

Y'know, if Warner Brothers likes free stuff...

Now that Christopher Nolan's reign of Gotham is complete, the question that's already been lying on the table is "What's next for Bruce and the Cowl?" because, as The Amazing Sider-Man reboot has shown, starting over is a sticky wicket.

But I have a solution that I'm offering free of charge to those Powers That Be should they choose to take advantage of my idea...

Video: THE DARK KINGHT RISES (alternate) ENDING LEAKED!

Very alternate indeed.

This is fairly NSFW. Possibly even NSFL. And certainly Not Safe For Kids. I don't want to give too much more away, and since you can see it's from FunnyOrDie, you now know all you really need to. We'll discuss after you decide whether or not to watch the video...

Ok, so, over-the-top-vulgarocity aside, there are gems in this, no? The mumble-garble of Bane, the in-theater noises and whispers, but mostly, it's that until a certain point it seems like it's just a shitty bootleg of the actual movie... and then it goes downhill from the teabag on. So is it too much? NBD? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Oh, I get it now...
Leaked.

Viral Videos, Preview Power, Spider-Man and Other Superheroes. An Exclusive Interview With The SleepySlunk

Every year or so the "Death of Hollywood" is announced. Again. But then, in defiance, it keeps on chugging along, as "dead" as it never was. Something comes along and revitalizes it in a way that spurs on the next thing. And what exactly is that next thing? It is always one of the standard options: Prequel, Sequel, Remake, Adaption or sometimes, if we're lucky, it's a crazy thing called an Original Idea.

But why all the retreading? Why do studios seem to shy away from the Original Ideas?

Lot's of reasons. One well-grounded belief is that too many Studio Suits have moved up from marketing departments, or are highly/overly marketing conscious, and for those types, the biggest hold-back for new original concepts is Marketability. "If I can't see the marketing in my head, how can I sell it? If it's too different how do I describe it? I have nothing to compare it to." It's all about risk. To start over the Spider-Man film series (as crazy as that sounds so soon after the last round with Rami/Maguire) is less risky than John Carter. Fact. And we all know how John Carter went this year don't we? And that was a well known book. It's a big money game and you can't blame studios for being nervous, sadly though, it's a mindset that actually slows the influx of "new".

A studio can only produce so much in a year and if half of that is reprocessing preexisting material, with another chunk dedicated to jumping on last years trend, plus the slice lingering in Development Hell, well it's a wonder anything new and different gets through at all. If only there was a way to quantify that risk, a way to show studios what we were most eager to see. What if we the consumer, could tell them what we wanted.

Louis Plamondon had very this idea. In this day and age there should be a website where upcoming movies could be voted on, to reflect it's popularity, interest and the eagerness of the audience to see it. It could be a yardstick for studios in that regard, basically making "Buzz" tangible. But there was no such site.

So, Louis created The SleepySkunk.com

It is a place designed to inform Hollywood exactly how we would spend our money. Movies in all phases of development are listed, some are not even in development, yet, just ideas or concepts, waiting for attention. The trial run has been going strong and a 2.0 upgrade is looming, but this week Louis is making headlines and even the front page of Variety - but not for the bold website that looks to revolutionize Hollywood, no, no. See, you should know that Louis also makes Mash-ups time to time. Very good ones, too. So it was no surprise to me, when what started as a half-joking idea on his Facebook page turned into a viral sensation.

I guess now's a good time to mention that I've been a "follower" of the Skunk's  page for a while and saw firsthand-ish, the gestation that lead to him creating a 25 minute preview mash of all publicly released clips and trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man. The "Super-Preview" as he titled it, is a somewhat condensed version of the film regardless of a remaining 110 minutes still available only in theaters. Well, it went viral as you might imagine and in the process was taken down a few times. It's garnered him a slice of notoriety plus hate email and the fact that such a chunk was even available, has pushed to the front the reoccurring debate of "how much is too much?" So there are a few questions we'd like to ask him… I mean, what kind of madman thinks he can take on Hollywood, anyway?

Maybe we should just ask Louis....
